A systematic review was performed to acknowledge the ethical, legal and social implications of the creation of a research Biobank in Ecuador, from the perspective of the principles of confidentiality, dignity and autonomy.
Articles written in English, Portuguese and Spanish from the last ten years and containing (DECS/MESH) terms: “research biobanks” AND “ethics,” “dignity,” “autonomy,” “confidentiality” AND “ethical, legal and social issues,” between January 2021 and May 2022, from the search engines Pubmed, Science Direct, Sicelo, and Google Scholar were included.
Those 85 articles with topics relevant to the research objectives were analyzed. Only 1% of them belonged to Latin America: Colombia, Brazil and Mexico being the countries that contributed the most.
Even though a worldwide consensus has not been reached on the ethical, legal, and governance guidelines for research biobanks in humans, the path to standardize these processes must be based on researchers and patients’ continuous training and the creation of common local and international governance frameworks. Confidentiality, dignity and autonomy are part of the ethical, legal and social framework of research biobanks in human beings.
