Abstract

The process of dissolution of the Netherlands Antilles, back in 2010, gave rise to a scenario in which the last colonial remnants of the Netherlands were forced to decide on their political future. The smaller three islands agreed to integrate themselves as special Dutch municipalities, while for the other three — Aruba, Curaçao and Sint Maarten—, it was decided to adopt a scheme of greater self-government within the Kingdom. This essay explores the current political and administrative context of the later mentioned islands, taking into account the whole process of the Antillean dissolution.
