Abstract

The main objective of this article is to measure ethnic diversity by distinguishing between urban and rural space, especially for municipalities with smaller populations. To do so, we first analyse the origin and diffusion of the discourse on cultural diversity, along with political practices related to integration and inclusion at various administrative levels. Subsequently, cultural diversity is measured using the Simpson's Index for the main urban and smaller rural regions. Finally, we analyse political practices and consequences at different administrative scales. The 15 urban areas with more than half a million inhabitants in 2020 are considered. For rural areas, municipalities with less than 2,000 inhabitants that are not included in urban areas are analysed. The analysis is carried out both for the population as a whole and from a generational perspective, comparing diversity between and within generations.
