Abstract

The golden ratio is regarded as a canon of beauty by tradition. This article explains the concept of golden ratio, using the facade of the Schoenstatt Shrine as an example. It further inquires about a possible neurological basis for the preference toward this ratio and proposes a magnetoencephalographic experiment to shed light on the matter. Under certain circumstances, such experiment may provide more relevant clues than Birkhoff’s aesthetic measure. It could even question Kant’s views on aesthetic judgments as completely disinterested.
