The Body after Death: Christian Anthropology and Funeral Liturgy

Death, as a universal and unavoidable reality, raises questions that shape human experience, culture, and religious reflection. This article examines death from an interdisciplinary perspective, bringing together cultural discernment, theological anthropology and liturgical analysis, with particular attention to the body of the deceased. At a time when death is increasingly hidden in contemporary societies, the Catholic tradition— echoing ritual practices found across many cultures—affirms that the body of the deceased is not simply a biological remainder, but points to a person shaped by relationships and symbolic meaning and directed toward eschatological hope. An analysis of Christian funeral liturgy shows how it preserves, through ritual, respect for the body and faith in the resurrection of the flesh. Finally, the article addresses, as a concrete applied question, ecclesial discernment concerning cremation and ashes in light of the 2024 Catholic Funeral Rites.
