Death as a Gift and a Problem in Tolkien’s Writings

This article analyzes the conception of death in the work of J. R. R. Tolkien, especially in The Silmarillion and The Lord of the Rings, from an anthropological and theological perspective. In contrast to interpretations that consider mortality only as a narrative or tragic element, it is argued that Tolkien presents death as an original gift of the one God, constitutive of human freedom and of his openness to a hope that transcends the world. The study examines, first of all, the Tolkienian cosmogony and the fundamental difference between Elves and Men. Next, the fall of Númenor is analyzed as a true theological tragedy, in which the fear of death transforms the gift into resentment and leads to a Promethean logic of power and domination. This denial of finitude reappears symbolically in the One Ring, which offers a false overcoming of time at the price of dehumanization, as well as the ethical and sacrificial dimension of death in some figures of The Lord of the Rings.
