The Redemptive Epistemology of Deathin the Sociology of Norbert Elias

Shortly before his death, the German sociologist Norbert Elias wrote The Loneliness of the Dying, in which he argued that modern society had relegated death and the dying person to the margins of public life, sanitizing and sterilizing the processes as sociated with it. Elias’s approach to death rests on three premises. Firstly, that the current attitude toward death masks an emotional inability to confront both our own and others’ deaths. Secondly, that it is important to demystify explanations of death and construct scientific theories that allow for greater control and guidance of the issue. Thirdly, that the most dramatic consequence of concealing death is the experience of loneliness and meaninglessness suffered by the dying person in the final moments of life. This article seeks to explore these three premises and situate them more broadly within the sociology of Norbert Elias.
