Since the Tatmadaw’s coup d’état on February 1st, 2021, the armed conflict in Myanmar has reached a turning point. Disproportionate violence against the protesters during anti-coup demonstrations has contributed towards popular mobilization, as well as militias.
The aim of this work is to determine whether the coup has been a significant factor in the reactivation of ethnic armed resistance in the country, and to which degree. To do so, the situation of the main armed groups will be analyzed before and after the military coup — accounting for other factors that may have enabled certain changes in activity status, as well as new actors on the playing board.
