The aim of this paper is to outline the current state of the university system and confront it with the cultural and social challenges that it should face. Based on certain statistical indicators referring to the last decade, we focus on the Spanish case, resulting in a critical diagnosis for all the groups with significant links to the higher education system. From the new paradigm of the European Higher Education Area, this paper analyses the role and responsibility of society, university institutions, professors and especially students, for their greater role and vulnerability.References
