The author, currently Dean of the Official Social Work Board of Madrid, reflects on the complexity of the relationship between social work professionals involved in the practice of social work and academics who have to advance the theoretical and applied dimension of the discipline. Manuel Gil’s own biography is an attempt at synthesis between both worlds, that of practice and that of the University, based on the conviction shared with the author of this article that it is necessary to improve the quality of professional intervention, by means of a well-honed deontology as befits a liberal and board-certified profession as a way to achieve greater dignity of social work professionals and of the people who request their services.
