Abstract

The Young Men´s Christian Association (YMCA) is one of the most widespread nonprofit voluntary associations. Its main aim is to promote essential human values such as solidarity, freedom, justice and social harmony. Born inEngland in 1844, it is currently present in 119 countries in all continents, and boasts 54 million members. «The Y» was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1946 on account of its work with war refugees and displaced persons. It has also contributed to creating such well-known sports as basketball (1891) and volleyball (1895). In 1980, it was established in Spain where, despite its importance,
it remains little known.
