The present paper reviews the main characteristics that define the educational paradigm in which the new European Framework for Higher Education is integrated and their impact on the role played by university teachers. To this effect, we identify a series of competences that university teachers must develop in order to face the challenge of the new methodologies and assessment systems promoted by this new educational approach. This paper also describes the way the students of the Universidad P. Comillas of Madrid view their good teachers. Finally, a reflection is made on the need to reassess and professionalize teaching at universities, undervalued in the last decades due to the higher degree of prestige ascribed to research amongst academics.
