Abstract

Between 1992 and 1994 there was a change in Italian politics of extraordinary importance as a result of the numerous scandals of corruption, in a process that became known with the name of Tangentopoli. This article discusses the reasons for the change and the consequences thereof, including the disappearance of the hegemonic party so far (Christian Democracy) and of the Italian Socialist Party, another important political party during the 1980s. All this would lead to a new political reality that contributed to shaping Italian politics for the next twenty years.
