Abstract

The intellectual production of Fomperosa y Quintana, member of the Society of Jesus, stands out singularly within the framework of the controversy around the moral status of Spanish Theatre during the XVI and XVII centuries. His position as critic of the theatre represented at play houses contrasts with hiswork as play wright and stage director in the «Colegio Imperial» of Madrid. This paper deals with both dimensions and analizes how the Jesuit manages to condemnthe public theatre while legitimizes the theatrical performances of the Society.
