European construction of a fortress without walls

This article examines the evolution of an Area of Freedom, Security and Justice in the European Union. First of all, we take into account free movement of persons, as a basis of this new concept. Moreover, it analyses several important steps given by Member States in relation to this common area: 1990 Convention of Schengen, the Amsterdam Treaty, the Nice Treaty and the European Constitution.
