Abstract

The Reyes Católicos, Ferdinand and Isabella, did not create the Hermandades. They simply applied the intelligence, energy and resoluteness required in order to realise the project. The spirit that they instilled on the Hermandades was due to the life-long nature afforded to the position of the first two Diputados Generales (period 1476-1533). That natue was the true guiding force which the newborn institution needed. The end result was that the Reyes Católicos conferred on the province and its Diputación, the vigour, impulse and good practices necessary for its progress and development. The History of the Alavés histoical territory is a demonstration of this fact.
