Participación religiosa e integración de los inmigrantes. Una reflexión entre América y Europa, entre historia y actualidad

Resumen

La dimensión religiosa, después de haber sido relegada al olvido, ha vuelto a ocupar un lugar prioritario en el discurso sobre la integración de los inmigrantes en las sociedades de acogida. El artículo analiza el tema desde la experiencia norteamericana pasada y presente, poniendo de relieve dos aspectos: a) no es cierto que la sociedad norteamericana haya sido siempre religiosamente abierta y tolerante; b) en un contexto hostil y discriminatorio, las referencias religiosas han representado una importante recurso para la interacción de los inmigrantes católicos y judíos de distinto origen. En la última parte, el artículo se ocupa de la experiencia europea, discutiendo las razones por las cuales en nuestro continente las expresiones religiosas de los inmigrantes, con particular referencia al Islam, son consideradas un obstáculo para la integración de las minorías inmigrantes
