Abstract

For the immigrant population sublet rooms are a common way of access to housing. In the context of the covid-19 juncture, this paper examines the impact of the mandatory home confinement decree at the beginning of the pandemic, on immigrants living in sublet rooms in the Barcelona Metropolitan Area. 27 semi-structured interviews carried out within this group are analyzed. The results show the worsening of pre-existing problems: coexistence problems, poor housing conditions, overcrowding or excessive prices, as well as the appearance of new difficulties due to constant and forced coexistence, not being able to use of public spaces and closure of institutions, affecting the physical and psychological health of this group. It is shown that subleasing, which hosts a large part of the residentially excluded population, does not guarantee a decent, adequate, and safe home to face home confinement.

Carolina Orozco, Universidad de Barcelona

PhD student in Geography, Territorial Planning and Environmental Management at the University of Barcelona. She is an Architect (Universidad de San Buenaventura), Master in Urban Management and Valuation (Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya). Her fields of research focus on the analysis of the housing of the immigrant population, the structure of the household and its territorial distribution, with special interest in the sublet rooms market.

Jordi Bayona-i-Carrasco, Universitat de Barcelona

Serra Húnter Lecturer in the Department of Geography at the University of Barcelona and a researcher associated with the Centre d'Estudis Demogràfics. He holds a degree in Geography (University of Barcelona), a postgraduate degree in Methods and Techniques for study of the population (Center d’ Studies Demogràfics) and a PhD in Demography (Autonomous University of Barcelona). His fields of research focus on the sociodemographic analysis of foreign immigration; in the study of the territorial distribution patterns of the immigrant population, with special interest in the phenomena of segregation and concentration; and in the analysis of the internal migrations of the population.

Fernando Gil-Alonso, Universitat de Barcelona

Associate Professor in the Department of Geography at the University of Barcelona. Graduated in Geography and History (University of Barcelona), postgraduate in Methods and Techniques for population studies (Center d'Estudis Demogràfics), Master (Magister) in Human Geography from the Autonomous University of Barcelona and PhD in Geography ( Human Geography program, Demography option) by the Autonomous University of Barcelona. His fields of research focus on Population Geography and Demography, with special interest in the spatial distribution patterns of demographic phenomena (fertility, mortality, internal and international migrations) and of population structures (aging, rejuvenation, etc.) both in urban and rural areas, as well as in the sociodemographic analysis of the immigrant and native population.
