Abstract

Much of the literature on mixed couples addresses their intercultural nature in problematic terms, highlighting the difficulties of these types of relationships. This article, instead, address their consideration as places of exchange of knowledge and learning, of redefining identity and questioning colonial ways of knowing. We report findings from a sample of 18 heterosexual couples formed by a Spanish member and another of different nationality as a part of a larger qualitative research project run over the last decade. We conclude with the consideration of mixed couples as privileged nuclei for the study of polyphonic, cosmopolitan, and hermeneutic social relations in the context of the changing relations between the center and the periphery.
