Child-parent relationships in families of Chinese origin have hardly been investigated in Spain from a developmental psychological point of view. Through individual in-depth interviews with 18 adolescents and emerging adults of a Chinese family background (2nd and 1.5 generation), we explored their experiences in the family work environment, their leisure time, their perceptions of the relationship with their parents, the support received, their cultural orientation, and how these aspects affect their psychological well-being. The results show several aspects, some of which are normative, that affect the well-being of the participants and their relationship with their parents. These young people feel, directly or indirectly, obliged to contribute to the family business or to support it through household chores or administrative tasks. Across development, they are able to reinterpret their past experiences understanding the needs of the family, and perceiving them not only as an obstacle to their psychological well-being in relation to their lack of autonomy, but also as promoting their development. They describe their identity as bicultural and disagree with parental expectations regarding the fulfilment of rules related to respect for parents (filial piety). As main difficulties in the relationship, they point out the limitation of free time and autonomy imposed on them and the lack of warmth from their parents. The lack of shared time and emotional support affect the filial-parental relationship.
