Abstract

In the last two decades the environmental movement experienced profound changes that generated new discourses. As a whole, the movement that emerged from these discourses is known as modern environmentalism. This article analyses some of its key ideas focusing on the relation between environment, energy and development and describes the ethical and political ideas that allow it to articulate an optimistic vision for the future of humanity. The article illustrates that, thanks to its interdisciplinary approach, modern environmentalism offers practical solutions to socio-environmental problems, facilitates dialogue among stakeholders and connects different disciplines. Furthermore, this movement proposes a new interpretation of the development process that is linked to a bold political agenda. In conclusion, the proposals of modern environmentalism probably deserve careful consideration.
