Abstract

The idea of freedom in Angela Carter's works has had a feminist interpretation mainly. Without denying this fact, this paper aims to show that the short story The Lady of the House of Love can admit another reading and it does so by discussing two references. The first one is the intertextuality with The Bride of Corinth by Goethe and the second one is philosophical materialism. Based on both texts, it will be proved that the idea of freedom has a wider sense.
