Often described as a fruitless endeavour, the translation of poetry can only really be understood within the realms of hermeneutics. Major formal obstacles such as rhyme and metre as much as the difficulties of style and rhetoric that are innate in this genre have to be confronted when translating poetry. Many of the decisions taken during translation are conditioned by the connotation and denotation contained in the message and can only be successfully overcome by the use of semantic constructs. Finally, an awareness of the textures of symbolism and meaning which configure the metapoetical universe of the poet and his work is essential, if a satisfactory translation is to be created.
