Cognitive and affective processes involved in problem solving: development and intervention

This paper summarizes the main existing knowledge about executive functions, understood as a set of high-level cognitive and affective processes that allow us to solve problems and adapt to new and complex situations. Special attention is given to their development during the first years of life and maturation of their neuroanatomical bases. Given that executive functions are affected in numerous disorders, hence causing problems in many areas of the daily life of the persons affected (academic achievement; professional, social and personal success; health and quality of life, etc.), we also present the requirements that effective intervention on executive functions must fulfill.
