Abstract

2001 was the year in which Spain began to consider the disappearance of the "rubia", the peseta. It will be replaced by the euro, which is not only an economic, commercial and monetary object. This changeover will cause major headaches, as the euro- calculators will have to multiply by 166.386, although it could be worse, as in Italy, where it is necessary to multiply by 1936.27.

In addition, this year saw the Churriana euros, manufactured by the FNMT, a unique and pilot experiment throughout Europe. It consisted of trying to spend days using the euro instead of pesetas.
