How to read Montaigne?
The «Essays», an exercise of oneself

This paper proposes an understanding of Montaigne’s Essays as an exercise of oneself that seeks to transform truth into ethos: a faithful life with an unfounded world and in perpetual change is the only life that can be lived. In order to do so, the interpretations of the work are discussed from the perspective of self-knowledge that have been proposed in the 20th century, using the readings of Horkheimer and Merleau-Ponty as guiding threads. The first one elaborates an external interpretation based on the idea that the Essays are a political instrument at the service of conservatism. On the other hand, Merleau-Ponty proposes an internal interpretation that privileges the understanding of the philosophy of the Essays as a metaphysical conception that transforms the theory of truth. Through the discussion of both it is possible to go through the most important positions defended on Montaigne’s thought from a broader perspective.
