When Ortega makes reference to the concept of vocation, he exposes, above all, characteristics of it. In that sense, we can find in his work explanations about how the vocation operates, in what sense does it guide men on the road to their own fulfillment, what is the relationship of it with the society in which the individual develops his life, among others. What he does not explain, however, is what vocation is, that is, what is its metaphysical nature. This paper aims to address this issue and explain why the nature of the vocation in Ortega’s philosophy can be understood metaphysically from its instantial nature.
