Philosophy and conversion in Joseph Ratzinger's doctoral dissertation on Saint Augustine

In Ratzinger's dissertation on Augustine it can be seen that the idea of philosophy underlying the text has two general meanings: firstly, philosophy is understood as a very intimate and existential activity, close to the subject, in the first person; secondly, a more objective conception that points towards a metaphysical understanding of reality makes its way. In the present study I analyze the first sense, in which the idea of philosophy remains very close to its etymological meaning. I suggest that Augustine's Christian conversion can be interpreted as a philosophical conversion, for the search for sapientia is always the constant that motivates the whole movement. His commitment to truth leads him to discover the value of authority, but always with a view to attaining wisdom, as reflected in his famous crede, ut intelligas.
