The political, social, and economic transformations which took place in the period considered by Paul Hazard as the historical backdrop of «The Crisis of the European Mind» (1680-1715) have been accompanied by a radical renewal that also affected philosophical ideas. This article aims to highlight certain symptoms of this changeover, namely the metamorphosis of ethical paradigms, through the analysis of Nicolas Malebranche’s interpretations of some moral concepts. Focusing on issues such as moral autonomy and legitimacy of self-love, the article shows that a transformation of moral criteria occurred within the very work of this philosopher, whose writings were published between 1674 and 1715.
