From uncounted time to counted time and compared
The generational conflict

The discovery of the New World made ours the Old, materializing and metaphorizing, in the whole of the arts and society, pairs of opposites: new/old, modern/outmoded. Claiming invention and novelty, modernity against the old order, this Baroque cult of the new implies a new culture of time: from science to consciousness, the progressive improvements of the mirror and the clock giving a new perception of the self, from uncounted time to measured time of an age that can be seen in a personal reflection: the fashion for self-portraits allows a distressing or consoling comparison with others. Vision and aversion for the elderly, youthism that Rousseau will denounce at the twilight of the Baroque. But the feeling of age transmits to youth the injustice of a patriarchal society where the greybeards reign, masters of power, fortune and forced marriages, against canonic free choice. Generation conflict, archaeology of our modernity.
