The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the use, even as late as the 18th Century, of Miguel Verino’s Disticha Moralia in moral and political arguments. Specifically, it will highlight the recurrent quotations taken from this work and reprinted in La Pensadora Gaditana —a weekly periodical publication written by a philosopher, Beatriz Cienfuegos, in Cadiz, between 1763 and 1764—, where they are used to argue in favour of civic virtue in the context of a new mercantile republicanism, the preface to a specifically Spanish type of liberal thinking. This moral and political thinking is developed, before anywhere else, within the space of public opinion, in other words, within the periodical press.
