The criticism of Miguel de Unamuno to Scientism

Abstract

This article describes and analyzes the critique of scientism according to the spanish philosopher Unamuno. Scientism was considered a kind of idolatry. We expose first Intellectual and vital evolution of Unamuno, who in his youth was positivist and defended the need to apply rigorous scientific methods to advance knowledge. After the crisis of 1897, Don Miguel was distancing himself from those who felt that the only valid knowledge was contributing to science and denied a space for reflection on the past issues. A second part of this article presents the various criticisms of Unamuno to the scientistic view of his time analyzing various writings of the period 1902-1911. During this period, Don Miguel distinguishes beetwen true science, which admires from the «pseudoscience» of the intolerant scientism which deny the access to the temple of wisdom for other doors. Unamuno distinguishes intellectuality and spirituality challenges. Unamuno discuses the reductionism of scientism wich do nort accept the way of scientists open for the methaphisical questions
