Science has frequently been used as a tool for refute religion. The most serious attempt in this direction has been made by positivism, identiying science and truth and declaring false the claims of religion. Neopositivism subsequently invoking the principle of empirical verification, instead of declaring false religion, considered it meaningless. The current epistemology, however, criticized the use made of this principle. Thus, the current status quaestionis on the relationship between science and faith rests on two foundations: on one hand, whether the differences of method and purpose between science and religion do logically impossible a refutation of religion by science; on the other hand, science itself admits the existence of an open space to ensure certainty (based on faith) that itself is unable to provide.
