The importance of the contribution of Augustine of Hippo on the study about the end of history and eschatology is indisputable. This article intends to retrace the evolution of Augustinian thought from a favorable position about an intrahistorical fullness of ecclesial character —particularly contained in the «Sermons»— and the development contained in the «City of God» as well as the reasons for this evolution. This change of perspective occurs through a new exegesis of the twentieth chapter of the Apocalypse where Augustine seems to deny this possibility.
