In a world like ours, where specialization seems to be the irrevocable norm that must govern research activity, the work of Athanasius Kircher, SJ (1602- 1680) underlines the importance of the quest for the universal. Kircher deserves to be described as «the last of the universal sages». The essay Athanasius (2016) intones, inspired by the German sage, a song to the human desire to learn and the need we have to constantly question the inherited ideas. He proposes a search that does justice to the etymology of the word “skeptic”, a term that does not refer to the unbeliever of everything, but to the one that initiates an incessant search.Downloads
