The crisis of medicine: Its ills and possible remedies
Keywords:
biomedical model, biopsychosocial model, technological fascination, commodification, primary care, doctor-patient relationshipAbstract
The current hegemony of the biomedical model, to the detriment of the biopsychosocial model, is considered in this article the main cause of the malaise with which medicine is often practiced and suffered today. Other factors are medicalization, commercialism and technolatry. In the face of a medicine in constant expansion and economically unsustainable, a rethinking of its aims, limits and priorities is advocated; first, restoring the doctor-patient relationship as the essential core of the profession; second, reestablishing Primary Care as the fundamental pillar of health systems.
