Abstract

This paper studies the relationship that two groups of adults establish with the Galician language during the process of settling in Galicia: on the one hand, diasporic returnees, people born in various Latin American countries who activate their connection with Galicia through a scholarship programme for university students of emigrant descent; on the other hand, international master’s degree students at Galician universities. The methodology used was an in-depth interview with people from both groups who have been trained in Galician during the Master’s period; in these interviews, the link with the language in the three phases of the experience (before, during and after the mobility) is described. Unexpectedly, it is the international students trained in Galician who are most interested both in this language and in maintaining their residence in Galicia.
