Academic networks, knowledge production, and Sino-perspectives in the Argentine academy of International Relations

This article examines how Argentine International Relations scholarship constructs and projects narratives about China —termed sino-perspectives— and the extent to which these reflect, contest or reconfigure available epistemic frameworks. The study proposes the concept of epistemic paradiplomacy to designate the capacity of subnational academic actors to articulate specialized knowledge internationally with relative autonomy from the state. Drawing on social network analysis, content and discourse analysis, and participant observation, the article comparatively examines the academic fields of Argentina (mainly), Chile, and Brazil. The results reveal three differentiated field organization regimes and, for the Argentine case, a discursive bipartition between sino-optimist and sino-skeptic poles, with a shared negation threshold that excludes sino-pessimism and representations of China as a revisionist actor, channeling critical positions through indigenous theoretical repertoires.
