Colombia, discovery, maps, independence, emeraldsAbstract
Colombia is the point where two hemispheres meet. Mountains and water are its essence, not only the waters of the Caribbean or the Pacific, but also those of its inland rivers, the Magdalena and the Cauca, which were the gateway for the first inhabitants. The first explorer was Alonso de Ojeda, who was accompanied by two sailors who became cartographers and to whom we owe the first maps of the discovered lands, Juan de la Cosa and Amerigo Vespucci. The architect of colonisation was Gonzalo de Quesada, who founded the city of Santa Fe de Bogotá in 1538. Later, Simón Bolívar, defeated in his native Venezuela, intervened in the war of independence. Unfortunately, it has become risky to live in the country of emeralds.
