After Uruguay, Ecuador is the smallest republic in South America. Since it is located on the equator, the line that divides the world in two, it takes its name from this geographical feature. The capital, Quito, is considered a World Heritage Site. Ecuador is also home to the Galapagos Archipelago, which inspired Darwin's theory of evolution and the origin of species. On 6 December 1534, Sebastián de Benálcazar founded the city of San Francisco de Quito, which was the first to gain independence from Spain.
