It is common for a wall of silence to go up when young girls reach their teens, which can be disconcerting for parents. In this article, the author addresses a family’s concerns, explaining what it really means to keep the lines of communication open at home. He examines the attitudes needed to make young people feel understood and respected, whilst avoiding giving orders, interrogations and ‘spying’.
