Abstract

This essay portrays current efforts in transformative education from the perspective of a teacher education working at the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa. The author compels us to consider teacher education from a professional development school model whereby a community of learners is created with the purpose of providing a well-rounded education for all children. The author proposes the use of Art Costa’s Habits of Mind and Thomas Jackson’s Philosophy of Children strategies to ensure a caring and courageous education that empowers students to reach their full potential and become active participants in a fair and democratic society.

  • Eva Ponte, , University of Hawai’i at Mānoa
    Eva Ponte is an Associate professor at the University of Hawaii, Manoa. Her research focuses on integrating teacher education programs with apprenticeship models of teaching and learning using assessment, feedback, and evaluation within a social justice framework. Her work is developed in local public schools, targets minority and bilingual students and promotes equity and diversity in education.
