The purpose of this article is to delimit the function and entity of the One within pagan Neoplatonism. The difficulty when facing this concept lies in the fact that, being the Principle of everything real, Neoplatonists defend that the One lacks properties, so it cannot be known to any extent. This raises the difficulty of to what extent, being ineffable, the One can be apprehended. With the aim of studying the cognitive method that can be applied to said object, we will see the three fundamental activities that the One emits on its creations, namely: transcendence, unity and goodness. In this way, although Neoplatonists place emphasis on the darkness of the One, we will show that there is a certain way of knowing this Principle, even if it is through the ontological hierarchy that it builds on reality. Through these concepts, we will finally see the role that the One plays in the philosophy of Neoplatonism as the limit of idealism and rationality, opening the door to current reflections on the relationship between fundamental reality and ideas.
