The so-called Pantheismusstreit or Spinozism controversy had its germ in Jacobi’s reading of paragraph 73 of the Education of Mankind in which Lessing expounds a conceptual interpretation of the Trinity, but the affinity between this religious doctrine and Spinoza's philosophy has been commonly neglected among scholars of Spinoza's work. This paper aims to contribute to filling this gap. After problematizing Jacobi's reading of § 73, the textual references in which Spinoza addresses the problem of the Trinity will allow us to identify in it the recognition of a theoretical effort to harmonize the one and the multiple which, despite the inadequacy of theological language, is at the basis of the conceptual strategy that structures the Ethics.
