Abstract

Here, we argue that, despite their methodological differences, Plessner’s philosophical anthropology and Husserl’s transcendental phenomenology reached similar conclusions about the nature of the organic. The argument develops as follows: in the first section, we give an account of Husserl’s influence on Plessner and the reasons that led the latter to separate from Husserlian phenomenology. In the second section, we elaborate on Plessnerian reflections on the nature of the organic, specifically, starting from the concepts of limit [Grenze] and positionality [Positionalität]. In the third section, we explore Husserl’s ideas on this matter. We will show why they are not incompatible with Plessner’s philosophy. We will conclude that, based on these considerations, the philosophies of the two authors followed more similar paths than one might think.
