Liang Qichao and the records of travels in Europe: reflections on western modernity

In Ouyou Xinyinglu (The Records of Travels in Europe), Liang Qichao argues that while European modernity had made significant contributions to human development, it inherently contains flaws that give rise to problems such as social inequality and spiritual crisis. Therefore, China should not blindly embrace European ideas, such as Social Darwinism or the concept of freedom, but rather adapt them to its own historical and cultural context. Furthermore, ancient Chinese thought could serve as a beneficial complement to European culture, particularly in reconciling idea and matter. As a product of the integration of these two civilizations, a new one will emerge and contribute to the development of all humanity.
