La frecuente peregrinación de españoles a Tierra Santa motivó la necesidad de conocer los itinerarios adecuados para el viaje. Uno de los más detallados fue el del anónimo Burdigalense, utilizado posiblemente por peregrinos hispánicos. Sin embargo, también existieron itinerarios redactados por los propios viajeros españoles. Un ejemplo de ello se conserva parcialmente en el códice 1358 (antiguamente J-86) de la Biblioteca Nacional, de origen complutense y datado en el siglo XIII. Este manuscrito, procedente de la Biblioteca de Felipe V, contiene crónicas poco estudiadas y presenta una escritura franco-gótica con miniaturas de estilo español.
