This article aims to show that Jesus’ proclamation of the Kingdom of God in the context of the Roman imperial power structure sheds light on important aspects that are often overlooked. The use of this expression reveals the political dimension of Jesus’ ministry. In line with apocalyptic tradition, the article presents Jesus’ confrontation with and victory over Satan, since the Empire is the historical manifestation of evil power. It is shown that Jesus does not seek direct confrontation with the imperial system, but he does criticize it radically. The final section of the article demonstrates that there is a very pronounced tendency in the Gospels to downplay the conflict with Roman power and to emphasize intra-Jewish conflict. This strategy of radical criticism combined with the avoidance of direct confrontation sheds light on the Gospel’s ongoing tension with institutions or ideologies that claim absolute authority, especially imperial powers.
