In this paper, we analyze Hobbes’ redefinition of protestant exegesis. According to Hobbes, it’s an exclusive task of the sovereign to establish what are the proper hermeneutical rules and sanction the interpretative output, because he is the authorized interpreter of the Bible. This approach involves a new foundation for the relations between the ecclesiastical and civil powers, making Hobbes one of the leading voices in the theologico-political debate of the 17th century.
