Las Escrituras no pueden ser interpretadas de cualquier manera, sino que, por el contrario, los exegetas han de guiarse por diferentes sentidos como son el literal, el objetivo, el histórico o profético, el moral o dogmático, espiritual, etc. Lo más importante no son las palabras concretas allí escritas, sino el sentido con que fueron escritas. Esto no puede realizarse sin la asistencia del Espíritu Santo. En este contexto se situó el Concilio Vaticano I, donde se planteó el verdadero sentido de la Eucaristía.
